Downsize: The Clutter Must Go!

You’ve made the decision to move to a smaller place or even into a retirement community.  Congratulations!  You’re preparing for a brand new activities and unique experiences!

And now comes the hard part --- DOWNSIZING!  How do we do it?

Yes, it is a big chore and it is usually best done in stages.  It takes preparation and soul searching to get it done and sometimes, just “stuff it in a bag” and get it out of here.  Ideally, you have been keeping your clutter down, donating to the Goodwill, but do you still have lots of just plain “stuff”?

We all do!  One of the easiest places to start is your own clothing.  If you have changed sizes, get rid of everything that does not fit your figure or your life style right now!  (Yes, I know, you might lose a few pounds, or need that old prom dress!) Let those old possessions go.  You’ll make new memories in new clothes.  Also pitch out clothing that is just plain worn out.  It is amazing how you have a whole closet of unworn clothes, but just seem to wear the same few garments over and over.

Next, start with unused items in closets or drawers, like winter fur coats in Phoenix, or bikinis!  Try these bits and pieces on if you must, but then, out they go…..

Move to your collections.  Whatever it is that you collect, decide how many of them you want to move and where the other pieces will go.  To a friend, or maybe a grandchild who shares your interest? Sometimes a local museum may want them or you can sell the collection.  Try special niche groups on the internet or in your community.

Think about your new level of entertaining as you move to your kitchen.  Will you need all those serving dishes?  If you are moving to a retirement center, you may only need to keep a minimum of equipment.  Use the same rationale with your golf trophies or awards.  Maybe a scrapbook with pictures of you holding the award will be enough.

Each area of belongings from cleaning supplies under the sink to 26 jars of tomato sauce needs to be dealt with.  Ask yourself if you really need these things in your new life.  It’s hard.  It takes time and patience, but it is a necessary step which you will make in your own good time.  Go forward at your own positive pace!
