Volunteering After Retirement

Volunteering in your “golden years” is a great way to stay young, fit and active!  By reaching out to help someone else, you can help yourself as well.  Volunteering is a fulfilling way to add dimension to one’s life.

The act of volunteering is a way of still working outside the home, but not getting paid for the work performed.  The giving of one’s time is a very valuable gift.  There are so many volunteer opportunities out there, one just has to find the right fit for them.  Take for example: if you worked in the food industry you may enjoy working in a food bank.  You could decide that you love to deal meals to shut-ins that are not able to get out themselves, this way you would bring food plus enjoyment to the shut-ins life.  If you enjoyed golfing, you might like to volunteer on a golf course.  There are many civic organizations that need donated time as well, like Ruritan and Rotary Clubs.

If you enjoyed the Christmas season you could even volunteer as a Santa!  Bring joy to someone by, handing out presents to needy children and/or senior citizens.  Now wouldn’t that be fun!  But, hospitals always need volunteers as well, usually by taking someone to their car, especially if they just gave birth to an infant.  The volunteering possibilities could be endless if you chose a hospital environment.  Then are opportunities to volunteer in Nursing Homes as well and give joy to someone that no longer able to care for themselves.

Volunteering is very rewarding and will assist in one’s transition from working to retirement!
