Get Pumping -- Senior Exercise

It’s time to get moving! Seniors tend to need less sleep than some younger people, causing us to awaken early. That’s the best time to get going! Plan your day giving you time for a good breakfast and a quick newspaper read. Then it is on to your community center for an exercise class or activity. How about a round of golf, some miniature golf or tennis? All types of lessons are popular including jazzercise, yoga, Pilates or aerobics. Geared to the participant’s needs and physical conditioning, light exercise improves your circulation, gets your heart pumping and helps digestion. Swimming, or walking in the water, is great if you have knee or impact concerns. The indoor walking track is ideal for hot or cold days. Sure, you go ‘round and ‘round, but you are not alone. Generally there will be someone else walking too, so you have companionship. You may want to walk outdoors if the weather permits. One of the best ways to stick with new ‘get up and go’ program is to promise to meet someone at the center. If you each hold the other accountable to be there, then chances are you will both get there. How often should you plan to exercise? Physical fitness experts suggest aiming for at least three times a week, more if you can vary your activities. Pick an activity that you enjoy or have always wanted to learn. Your interest inspires more frequent participation. Before starting a new exercise program, check with your doctor for any health precautions. Remember to bring water and dress appropriately. Always follow staff directions and other safety instructions. Don’t overdo, and be aware of sudden changes in your physical condition. You want health, not harmful activity.
